Sony VAIO VGN S2XP - new dimensions for my daily work

Ok – after researching for some weeks and finding major competitor fujitsu siemens simply incompetent to sell or even demonstrate a product in public, I came across the Sony S2XP.

Ultramobile computing as they call it… and I will receive my order TOMORROW :-)

and it's got all I need:

  • Centrino 1.8 GHz
  • 1024 MB (with my 512 upgrade)
  • 80 GB disk
  • 13.3" X-black LCD with 1280 × 800 pixels
  • DVDRW
  • Wi-Fi G 54Mbit / Bluetooth and WXPP
  • and most important: a keyboard I can write on…

Believe it or not – but the most thrilling issue was to find – not the best CPU/RAM etc… at lowest price but the best keyboard… and I admit that Sony still doesn't compare to the Apple Powerbooks – which got unbelievable cool keyboards… but they are ok… compared to other sub notebook keyboards…

It has the new type of Pentium-M with 2MB L2 Cache and a 333 Mhz PC2700 DDR memory… combined with the Radeon 9700 that sony squeezed into this 1.89 kg gadget it actually now outperforms not only my old Dell Inspiron 8600 but my normal workstation as well… Good to know that my new workstation will arrive on next wednesday :-)

With all this power it shall last 5 hours ( according to Sony spec ) or better 4 hours according to some reviews… That's enough for an evening at the university…

For many, an ultraportable notebook is only as good as the battery life it provides. In the case of the VGN-S2XP, we found that it offered in the region of four hours between charges. This isn’t quite the all-day computing we’d like but it’s more than usable for long meetings and catching up on work when away from the desk.

oh … and the "downside" for many:

The only real problem with the VGN S2XP, as far as we can see, is the price. With a list price of £1799, this notebook will be out of the reach of most people’s budgets- in fact, with that amount of money you could now buy two PCs. If you, or better yet an employer, have the money to spare, the VGN-S2XP is possibly the best multi-use ultraportable on the market

It cost me € 1999,- + 249 for the memory upgrade + VAT = € 2679,- ... So you sure need good arguments or the will to get only premium hardware for your daily/nightly work.

Expect more about my Sony S2XP in the future…

Sony VAIO VGN S2XP - new dimensions for my daily work

Hi Jorlin,

Thanks for this reminder...

I am using this wonderful Tool now for more than a month ... and IT ROCKS!

I have not yet written about it, because I simply couldn't find any problems ... except that a wrong software-driver update that disabled all extra buttons forced me to a really seamless full recovery from shadow-partition... and it worked fine...

also my UMTS/GPRS T-Mobile card has a little problem with this model... whenever it switches down to slower GPRS, I hear a bad static noise on the left stereo speaker....

a good cure: put a CD on the UMTS card to stop this is class or the meeting... simple and effective shielding... but transfer reduces a bit with this trick....

kind regards,Christoph
