Testing Dual Opteron, Dual Core 265 Server

After years of using DUAL-XEON servers only, theplanet now offers a

Dual Opteron, Dual Core 265 Server Our 1U rackmount server for 2 days now…

Mine is already deployed and I'm trying to migrate a good amount of database bound projects there…with Dual Core Opteron , 2GB RAM, 2 x 160GB SATA HDDs, 100Mbps uplink, 2,500GB of premium bandwidth, Red Hat Enterprise Linux V3 40GB of net backup, and a GOLD level management for OS updates/patches, monitoring and an hour of monthly administration the price of $399 is quite fine – add $25 for the cpanel license and you got a power horse…

According to some performance benches, this machine should allow at least 1,5 the power of the dual-xeon 2800 I was using for all other servers…

These opterons finally allow to use the NUMA technology

which is explained a bit here and just means

Quote:

In short, NUMA allows for systems with multiple processors communicate better. It can lead to higher performance and much higher peak bandwidth numbers. In fact, only a NUMA-aware system configuration will be able to achieve the peak memory bandwidth numbers which are capable from Opteron CPU's.

Now this sounds great – and my friend JD swears on Opterons for his servers for years already… will let you know when all DUAL XEONs are migrated :-)
