64bit Linux, Dual Dual Core Opterons and a looping SMBIOD process

Well this dual core, dual opteron server I got rockes.

In fact it rocks so much that I could consolidate 1 P4×2800 and 1x XEON2800 machine on one of those boxes… in fact I was so amazed that I ordered a 2nd one of those.

However the 64bit package caused or still caused several issues

  • ThePlanet first delivered the machine with RHE version 3, altough the Red Hat Enterprise 4 architecture is optimized specifically for the 64bit Opterons – so I had to redo everything after 1 week of finding this out – or so … not much appreciated – bad consultation at all
  • the perl upgrade package provided by Cpanel/WHM – specifically for 64bit perl – simply fails to upgrade… not sure where these guys are testing, but it's not the 64bit RHE4 that I use… not my definition of "supported"
  • SMBIOD / SMB service looping at 99% : After some hours or days SMBDIO starts looping at 99% CPU time, regardless if I'm using mounts via fstab or autofs… that's a hassle… 99% CPU means 1 core of the 4 is using up all its resources, so that's at least a 25% performance degradation
  • Movable Type / MT Blacklist – the stoneage version I am using here does not support 64bit perl… believe it or not – perl is platformdependent when it comes to some serialization code… and that's simply not the case… therefore I'll have to upgrade to a better supported blogging plattform pretty soon… I'm sick of using the pretty old version here anyway… just not sure if I'll go to Drupal for all the features and options or just make a step to Wordpress… we'll see…

Anyone out there to help me with the SMBDIO hassle?
