Today I found one of my dedicated servers at theplanet sitting there,
unresponsive and dead – about 10 different projects lost all traffic, income etc
I'm paying those guys for "managed admin services" which means support with server hard- and software issues and of course a "hand" at the location…
For a second time in a row, for the same server, it happened to me that the admin guy saw the dead server and posted a pretty dumb statement like
It appears as though your system is having some very serious issues at this time. What changes have recently been made on this server?
And that's the status I got after 18 hours
(counting 30 hours downtime now)
No further information, no response and of course the whole server is DEAD
the reboot console even tells me "Current power Status: OFFLINE"
so it looks like the whole thing is unplugged
I did have issues with TP, their admins screwing up config sometimes, unable to fix issues that I found later on myself, but THIS incident is by far the most unpleasant and hugest outage I ever had.
I think it is way time to look for a new server hosting company.
Update about 12 hours later:
I found out that the guy who left the machine hanging for 18 hours was the exact same Mr.D. who left the machine hanging there for 8+ hours back in November…
can you believe it?
The last time I wrote them "I hope Mr.D. won't leave our server unattended for a whole workday the next time, else I will seriously consider moving all managed services somewhere else…"
Well, I'm not considering that anymore… I already ordered a new server.
Update another 15 hours later…
I could recover my data with a LiveCD , moved to a server ordered from SoftLayer and called this server with TP
Crazy thing is that they state
PLEASE NOTE THAT SERVICE WILL NOT BE CANCELLED AND YOU WILL CONTINUE TO BE BILLED FOR SERVICE UNLESS YOU CONFIRM VIA TELEPHONE AT 800-913-3724 THE INFORMATION PROVIDED IN THE CANCELLATION NOTICE YOU SUBMITTED VIA ORBIT.
This is a number where you can talk to an EV1Servers representative. If they would answer. They even have a live chat facility, with 13 people in front of me… for the last 20 minutes…
Well, should they decide to charge the server anyway for the next month I'll make my bank get a a chargeback… and move away with the other 2 servers as well..
This company is the perfect example of what often happens if you merge two huge companies, often previous competitors…
The overall outage due to this incident was 50 hours for about 30 projects … as you can image I cancelled that server
Update 3/14: two servers cancelled already
after EIGHT WEEKS later, I got feedback from “the planet”
....we have found that your managed services options are escalations that actually exceed the options available to you as managed services. You are responsible for maintenance, and administration of the server. The type of assistance that your server was requiring is only given by our Professional Services Team.
Under gold managed services you are provided the following:
1. Automated pager/email notification for up to 5 addresses
2. Notification to phone contacts and restart of monitored services
No credit will be given.
2. Notification to phone contacts and restart of monitored services
should give you a pretty clear expecation what that company is responsible for.
but
NO phone contact was made – they did not even try
NO restart was made , and that could have curing a lot already
Instead the planet “admin” just waiting for an answer
to the question “did you change anything” ... (see above)
The proper action was taken through out the the issue, but unfortunately the issue does not fall under an outage.
Your escalation procedures are not supported under managed services.Your request for credit is declined.
How crazy are these people to say that leaving the server unattended, unrebooted AND the owner unnotified
is proper action ???
Well, again I feel very confirmed to have cancelled 2 of 3 company servers already. the 3rd one follows next week
ThePlanet.com don’t care for long term customers any more.
Sad story.
