Drupal talent - demand outweights supply

Just reading Dries’ rant about Hiring Drupal Coders and can fully agree with him.

From my experience I haven’t found a single student on the austrian universities coding Drupal. Reason for search students was for a part-time assignment PLUS the expectation that younger people would tend to do more “web based stuff”

According to Dries, Self-Training PHP coders will be the dominant strategy for the future, and I must fully agree.. the point is, that many tech universities today are riding on the “Java is cool” marketing hype of the late 90s and miss to focus on PHP as a way better tech to ship “small to midsize applications”...

I mean it’s nice that after 5+ years of a tech degree you are capable of implementing stuff on a full J2EE container (not setting it up or tuning it, I’m talking coding only) ... BUT there’s not that many cool and huge projects to justify the immense overhead a J2EE project brings with it…

Hence the future of fast learning PHP coders will be bright _ at least in my company… :-)

    Frankly,

we are running DRUPAL 4.x sites

we are running DRUPAL 5.x sites

and we will be running the new company site for cemper.com on Drupal 6 soon (postponed launch for DP6)

BUT, I will not and cannot commit to an upgrade mania solely to generate work and say we’re running recent versions
