I just came across this WordPress 2.x Plugin called Show Top Commentators which should encourage more discussion from your readers, by displaying their names (linked to their website if desired) and number of comments they have made recently to your sidebar.
So far I have no idea if this cool function is available for drupal,
but I think it could be worthwhile implementing such a plugin.
